It seems that we've generally agreed that the years from 1970-1978 have been fraught with dastardly Death Eater deeds, so I'd like to establish a nice, organized history to avoid confusion in general.
1970
July 17: A vocally pro-Muggle political talk show host is murdered during his 7 o’clock a.m. show. All listeners heard the host warmly welcome his “surprise visitor” into the studio, followed by a surprised outburst of, “Oh my—” Some listeners swear they heard the murderer say “Avada Kedavra” on the airwaves, but no recording was found. The perpetrator is still at large.
1971
August 25 The editor of The Other World, a magazine dedicated to research and observation of the Muggle world, was murdered after receiving a series of death threats through the month of August. The publishing house in which this magazine and other Muggle publications was attacked by giants during the night.
1972
February 17 The American Ambassador is placed under the Imperius Curse. The placement of this curse has been undiscovered and continues through 1978.
1973
October 25 to November 7: The Death Eaters take control of the Floo Network. The International Floo Network is disconnected as well as the Local Floo Network, meaning the Floo Network that connects the homes across Britain. The Floo Network is organized in clusters-- all clusters seem to malfunction. All of those who attempt to Floo from their fireplaces get stuck in between grates. Some witches and wizards are never found. When the Department of Magical Transportation starts to reactivate clusters on November 3, it is discovered that numerous homes have been burned down and the inhabitants killed.
The head of the Floo Regulation Panel was arrested and charged with destruction of government property and found guilty. He was sentenced by the Wizengamot to fourty years in Azkaban.
1974
February 1 The goblin alliance with Voldemort becomes public. All vaults registered by Muggleborns are frozen indefinitely.
May 25 The refreshments at the marriage of a halfblood to a Muggle were poisoned. Those at the wedding party who took part in the refreshments died within three hours of the wedding. One of the caterers was arrested and sentenced to one hundred years in Azkaban.
December 8 The first giant attack takes place.
1975
November 21: Death Eater Gabriel Flint is murdered for betraying the Death Eaters to Alastor Moody and Albus Dumbledore.
December 24 An integrated Muggle-wizard church is attacked during a Christmas Eve service.
1976
December 7 Sixth year Paris Wilkes placed the Cruciatus Curse on Muggleborn sixth year Will Wigworthy. Arithmancy professor Jocasta Macnair Obliviated Paris so that he could claim innocence under the influence of Veritaserum.
December 16 Posing as The Muggleborn League, student Death Eater sympathizers kidnapped the children of several Ministry officials and held them hostage in the Wilkes Castle until the terms were met.
December 31 Augustus Rookwood kidnapped Unspeakable and Muggleborn Benjamin Croaker from outside of the Bones home and brought him to Whores-R-Us.
1977
January 1 Julia Nott tortured Muggleborn Benjamin Croaker in Whores-R-Us. Croaker was released and survived, although he claimed to be dead for several days after the event.
January 13 Paris Wilkes, thinking that he was serving Lord Voldemort, willingly followed Julia Nott into Whores-R-Us, where he was subsequently tortured by Wyston and Julia Nott. Julia was arrested and charged for murder in the first degree, but was submitted to the Janus Thickey Ward at St. Mungo's because she was found to be insane.
I have no idea what to do about Dementors. It's been suggested that we let them out within the next year, but it would make sense that they've been at least trying to escape for the last several years. There might be a team of Aurors dedicated to keeping the Death Eaters around Azkaban. Ideas?

Just a few thoughts.
Although the floo thing does kind of sound like LJ going down. *snerk*

See, I was thinking he would have gone "BOOM" to make a first impression, just from the way they were like, "Eleven years and precious little to celebrate." But I wouldn't be opposed to the trickle effect.

ES: I meant, was there a specific event [that lead people to start referring to Voldemort as 'You-Know-Who,' etc.]?
JKR: With Voldemort? It was gradual. He was killing and doing some pretty evil things. In the chapter “Lord Voldemort’s Request,” when he comes back to request that teaching post in book six, you get a real sense that he’s already gone quite a long way into the dark arts. By that time a lot of people would be choosing not to use his name. During that time his name was never used except by Dumbledore and people who were above the superstition.
